In the future, Friends of Union Station plans to:

  • Promote events that will activate the space around the station.
  • Monitor the selection process for the Union Station Master Developer.
  • Advocate for the creation of a great civic space.
  • Advocate that the public use and preservation of the station's historic setting are paramount considerations in the redevelopment of the station.
  • Monitor compliance with agreed upon development plans.

A few months after the Placemaking Workshop, Friends of Union Station participated in a LoDo District-sponsored barbeque and jazz lunch attended by over 200 people. The event demonstrated the benefits of preserving open space at Union Station for public gatherings.

Since then, Friends of Union Station has hosted a presentation by Fred Kent of Project for Public Spaces, facilitated a Power of Ten Workshop, held a member meeting to inform the public as to the status of the developer selection, and organized a Flower Market on 17th Street in front of Union Station (again to demonstrated one possible use of a public space in front of the station.

For a chronological recap of our activities and involvement in the public process, please refer to our News Page.

Ideas for future activities on the plaza include book fairs, art exhibits, food emporiums, ice cream socials, concerts, an ice rink open to the public for recreational skating during the holidays (remember Zeckendorf Plaza?) and an evening with the Model Railroad Club.

If you would like to join Friends of Union Station, please view our Membership page.
